Endless queues, empty shop shelves and gaunt faces greeted you everywhere. This was the situation in 2008 to early 2009. These were the worst economic years in the history of Zimbabwe, which had deeply devastated the political landscape, food security in the country and the social life of the people. Three years from now the country is in a better state than it was, the gratitude being accredited to the unity government.
The saying united we stand and divided we fall certainly has some relevancy that i never acknowledged before. This weekend marked the third anniversary of the unity government, which came into being after the internationally discredited 2008 presidential elections. While little has been done in the political sphere, which is still in a state of limbo, since its inception, the agreement has however brought stability to Zimbabwe.
One of the most notable improvements in the past three years has been the end of hyper inflation which has been passively animated by the adoption of the US Dollar and the South African rand , giving Zimbabweans certainty in their purchasing power.
The education sector likewise is finding its footing with the impressive marking and release of all external examinations. Although it is still docked with the recurring strikes by the teachers(civil servants). The education minister has vigorously engaged in textbook donations the past year.
The GPA has certainly stabilised situations but one cannot help to continuously echo the fact that the political sphere is still in shambles. With the elections coming soon, it is a matter of concern, if the GNU will still be present or will it be demolished and so will all its benefits. Will stability be present without the presence of the agreement?
